Lymphedema... also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system.The lymphatic system returns the interstitial fluid to the thoracic duct and to the bloodstream, where it is recirculated back to tissues.
The lymphatic system, because of its physical proximity to many tissues of the body, is responsible for carrying cancerous cells between the various parts of the body in a process called metastasis. The intervening lymph nodes can trap the cancer cells. If they are not successful in destroying the cancer cells the nodes may become sites of secondary tumors.
Diseases and other problems of the lymphatic system can cause swelling and other symptoms. Problems with the system can impair the body's ability to fight infections.
Lymphatic Drainage is assisting the body to return the interstitial fluid to the thoracic duct and back into circulation in the bloodstream using light-touch.
